Maths at St Maria Goretti

Intent:

We believe that Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. At St Maria Goretti we intend to provide a high-quality mathematics education that provides the foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation and of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Based on the 2014 National Curriculum, the St Maria Goretti Maths curriculum intends to ensure that all children:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Are able to reason Mathematically
  • Can solve problems by applying and extending their mathematical skills.
  • Are able to use the most efficient methods to solve calculations.

Implementation:

The New Primary Curriculum for Teaching gives an outline of what we teach in each year. Our medium-term mathematics plans are based upon the White Rose Maths Small Steps Document which details each individual objective taught in each unit of work, ensuring that lessons follow a clear, sequenced progression of skills.

At St Maria Goretti, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in mathematics. Through the use of the practise, apply and extend model, we aim to develop children’s mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding. In all our daily lessons we encourage children to ask, as well as answer mathematical questions. We encourage all pupils to use a range of mental strategies in Mathematics. Children have opportunities to use a wide range of resources, such as base 10, place value counters, number lines, number squares, digit cards and apparatus to support their work.

Impact:

As a result of our Maths teaching at St Maria Goretti, you will see children who are:

  • Engaged and challenged
  • Confident and able to talk about their maths learning using mathematical vocabulary
  • Able to use a variety of resources to support their learning
  • Use different representations of mathematical concepts

Maths is assessed termly by class teachers to ensure all pupils make good progress. Where pupils are identified as requiring additional intervention at each assessment point, through the Raising Attainment Plan, pupils are provided with appropriate interventions to support them in making accelerated progress.

Maths Lessons:

Maths lessons at St Maria Goretti ensure that these skills are embedded within Maths lessons through a model of practising, applying and extending mathematical concepts. At our school, the majority of pupils will be taught the content from their year group only to allow them to truly master the skills required for each year group, applying and problem solving in context with the wider world.

Ways to Help Your Child at Home:

All pupils are taught to develop efficient strategies for mental and written calculations which is clearly outlined within our school policy.

It is important that you support and encourage your child to develop their mathematical fluency. By the end of year 2, pupils should know the number bonds to 20 and be precise in using and understanding place value. By the end of year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table.

To support and extend children’s mathematical learning, they are able to access TT Rockstars using their personal password. They can earn points based on how much improvement they make in their own learning. Below is a list of online resources which may also be useful to use at home to support your child’s learning.

Careers Links:

Through our links with local and national businesses, we are able to provide our pupils with a range of opportunities to engage with industry professionals throughout our careers curriculum. This includes, visits from employers from a range of fields e.g. banking, accountancy, business management. These opportunities allow our pupils to gain an insight into how their mathematical learning is applied in the world of work. Visit our Careers page to find out more about our Careers Curriculum.

Parental Engagement:

Watch Me Learn sessions provide opportunities for parents to become involved in their child’s computing learning. This may be through a cross-curricular approach where parents are able to observe the ways in which pupils utilise their Maths skills in other areas of the curriculum e.g. Science or Computing, or through discrete Maths  lessons.

During our STEM and Careers events, there are also often opportunities for parents to join in with our learning and even volunteer to share their careers to inspire our children as the workforce of the future!
